What Is the Cabincore Trend?

Unquestionably some of the biggest trends this season include lug-sole hiking boots, quilted jackets, loose, straight-leg trousers, and flannel shackets. But when you stand back, you can see that there is a general aesthetic at work here. In particular, one that takes the wearer outside a log cabin in the woods, maybe with a lake just out of sight, tucked in between a few evergreen trees. We're confident that this, which goes by the name cabincore, will replace cottagecore.

Autumn has brought on a more woodsy but equally lovely reverie, whereas summer's cottagecore moment had us pining for life in the English countryside—baking pies that chill in the window of a storybook cottage while we pick flowers from the wild meadow outback.  This time of year, plaid and flannel are usually trendy, but with the emergence of cabincore, these classic looks are being joined by a longer variety of looks that might serve as a packing list for a vacation to Vermont or Oregon for some hiking.

Perhaps it's because everyone is aching to go on vacation. Or just a fascinating byproduct of the increase in outdoor activities (we don't have anywhere else to go, after all). Whatever the cause, there's still a distinction between a genuine hiking outfit and trendy cabincore. Seek out high-end accents, like rose gold hardware on boots or unexpected pink corduroy, to keep your ensemble looking more put together and less like you just walked off a mountain path.

1. madewell Walton Shirt-jacket In Plaid

The cornerstone of any cabincore wardrobe is an appropriately rugged yet stylish shacket. This black and white plaid number will look as good with forest green chinos as it will worn over a black silk slip dress.

2. levi’s 501 Ripped High-waist Crop Straight-leg Jeans

Pair these cropped jeans with higher ankle boots (and perhaps some chunky socks). That way your ankles won’t be exposed to that cold, mountain chill.

3. sorel Lennox Hiker Boots

We love the pale beige hue of these chic boots (which are also waterproof) for a sleek, minimalist look. If your style is a bit bolder, swap the cream-colored laces for a more colorful or printed pair.

4. everlane The Renew Fleece Raglan Sweatshirt

Dress up this fuzzy sweatshirt by layering it over a plaid button-up or lace-collared shirt.

5. anthropologie Carolina Trimmed Rancher

This wide-brim hat has the same silhouette as a true hiking hat, but the leather trim keeps it looking Instagram-ready.
